The joke’s on Spring Garden

By | Jan 17, 2010

Despite what the name suggests, Anthony Smith takes his new business very seriously. He’s one of three owners of the new Jokers Comedy Club on Spring Garden Road. “I want Jokers to be the first thing in people’s minds when they think of going to a comedy club,” says Smith, who is also the manager.
It began six months ago when the partners decided to fill the empty Spring Garden Road basement location (beneath Onyx). “We were looking for something a bit different in Halifax,” says co-owner Michelle Mitchelmore.
So far, audiences are responding. Dylan Rhymer, a comic who has done several acts at Jokers, is enthusiastic. “It’s a great space,” he says. “I think Haligonians are more tuned in to live performances.”
The club hosts live shows nightly. “It’s a more relaxed vibe, and it’s more of a cabaret comedy club,” Smith says. “I hope audiences enjoy themselves. They can come in, relax and stay. They’re not forced out after the show’s over—we welcome people to stay and have food and drinks.” Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays professional stand-up comics come in, and Sundays through Wednesdays feature amateurs, open mike, sketches and improv.
According to Smith, the location is key to its success. “I think Spring Garden needed a little fun added to it.”
