When you live in a place for a while, it’s easy to overlook the things that make it special. But for members of Sackville Photography Club, field trips around Halifax are the way to rediscover and document the area’s special features.
The Sackville Photography club is a non-profit organization with about 130 members. Chair Denise Ward says that the club brings all kinds of photographers together, from beginners to weekend warriors to professionals.
Darrel Nicks, field-trip coordinator, organizes two club outings each month but others often happen spontaneously. He offers an example of what club members discover. “The general public [doesn’t] think that we have waterfalls around here; Some of them are 30, 40, 50, 60, 70 feet high,” says Nicks, describing cascades in Windsor, Cape Breton and Stewiacke.
The photographers often venture further afield, too. Nicks says that they go to Lunenburg “quite a bit” and also visit the Annapolis Valley, Digby, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island.
Lawrence Spencer, secretary/treasurer of the club, is 67 years old and has been taking photos for more than 50 years. He still enjoys the discoveries the club makes together. “Anywhere that someone can suggest a place to go that they have been or heard about or seen or read about,” he says, “we’ll try to get a field trip there.”
