The Wardrobe Too
Boasting “designer fashions for the discriminating woman,” this boutique’s selection includes fashions from Sarah Paeini of Italy, plus Canadian lines …
When Logan Hudak and Lee Fraser decided to open a retail boutique in downtown Halifax, they wanted to sell more than stylish clothes.
“We have a bunch of artwork from some really talented local artists up on all the walls,” says Hudak, adding he’s sold more than $1,000 in local artwork since opening 24 Twenty Eight. The shop also sells clothes and accessories made by local designers.
24 Twenty Eight, on the corner of Granville and Sackville streets, aims to style the “fun loving, outgoing and fashionable people” of Halifax. The shop features labels from across the globe including Kill City, Cardboard Robot, Peter Grimm and C’est Moi, says Hudak, who DJ’s with his business partner by night. The store also boasts funky accessories: earrings made from the lens of sunglasses, belts, hats and much more.
Last year, Hudak was looking for a job. Having toured the local DJ circuit with Fraser, the pair decided to infuse music, style and design into one concept: 24 Twenty Eight boutique. “Fashion is a big part of the music industry,” he says. “We saw that as an opportunity to get involved in an industry that we’re interested in learning more about.”
After they were denied funding from an array of business programs, the duo decided to start up the shop out of their own pockets. Hudak and Fraser spent weeks constructing change rooms, racks and shelves before opening in late summer.
Eventually, Hudak hopes to set up a DJ school of sorts on the upper level of the unit and also work with local design schools to feature
students’ work. For now, Hudak and Fraser are paying the bills. “We wanted to make work for ourselves,” says Hudak. “We just need day jobs. It’s not as glamorous as one may think… but it’s fun.”
