Excitement has been brewing in the North End of Halifax and it’s beginning to bubble over and overflow to every nook and cranny of this up-and-coming neighbourhood. Between new restaurants, boutiques and construction all around – there’s something happening here. Evolution Lifestyle Market in Creative Crossing on Charles Street is one of the latest offerings to emerge and one more way to make you and your humble abode more stylish than ever.
Owner and designer, Robert Goldsworthy, clearly feels he’s found the ideal home for his new venture. On a blisteringly hot Saturday morning, I popped in to visit and peek around. The space is modern and bright with a smattering of home décor couture that appeals to a wide range of budgets while maintaining a discerning level of quality.
I am immediately drawn towards the luxury bath products from Cote Bastide (think mild fig scented bubble bath) in the most quintessential French packaging of delicate bottles with pretty cursive. As a steadfast fan of letter and note writing, I also adore the old fashioned stationary available. Goldsworthy is always traveling and brings back products that are new to Halifax but he’s also big on supporting local. Hence, the selection of edible goodies such as Sledding Hill’s chili lemon jelly and lavender simple syrup and baking sugar featured. Evolution also carries the most striking cards by local photographer Jennifer Chapin, capturing colourful snapshots of Nova Scotia scenery.
I couldn’t be happier to see a new lifestyle boutique materialize in the North End and add to our already burgeoning neighbourhood. While I am loving the growth taking place, there’s still a part of me that hopes the grassroots communities and businesses don’t get pushed out. I was pleased to hear that Goldsworthy has a similar attitude and partners with local charities and community groups as much as possible. He makes a point of serving up hot food each week at Hope Cottage and amongst other partnerships, he will soon be carrying a line of salad dressings called Hope Blooms to be harvested and released by the North End Community Health Centre.
Already an experienced and established designer, Goldsworthy’s recent credits include designing the lounge, restaurant, ballroom and gold guest rooms at Atlantica Seasons Hotel. With Evolution Lifestyle Market, he will be available for professional and private design work. At the same time, he hopes the market will appeal to a wide array of consumers.
“My big focus is value and accessible price point,” Goldsworthy says with a smile. “I want to be have a broad range of customers from university students who would love the colourful shot glasses we carry to a client who would like their favourite chair carefully reupholstered.”
