Ships Ahoy

By | Jul 24, 2012

I make no secret about my affinity towards all things nautical. Be it traditional sailor stripes, anchor motifs or jaunty hats – I’m not afraid to let my Nova Scotia geek flag fly. With the tall ships majestically breezing through the harbour and Chester race week fast approaching, our lovely waters are graced with a bounty of sailboats in all shapes and sizes this summer.

Accessorizing to match this lovely theme is a breeze and two of my favourites are currently available at J&R Grimsmo boutique. I purchased my Cassandra Kellam porcelain sailboat earrings at the onslaught of summer and they’ve been making regular appearances ever since. A NSCAD grad with a penchant for stud earrings, Kellam’s delicate sailboats in pastel colours with hints of gold were the perfect touch for strolling along the waterfront this week.

For the homestead, J&R Grimsmo also offers hand hooked wool Chandler 4 Corners pillows with anchor designs in shades of navy and cream. I love mine as a cute accent in the living room or heaped atop a mound of matching cobalt pillows on my bed. I am also coveting the wonderful whale and sailboat rugs they carry, which I (unfortunately) cannot purchase because of my cat Charly, the destroyer.

While the rest of us oooh and aaaah over the sailboats dotting the horizon, there is something to be said for bucking tradition. I learned this from my almost two-year-old nephew Gregory yesterday as we watched the parade of sails from the Seaport Market rooftop. He eschewed nautical looks for a tougher street style of a backwards black baseball hat, skater sneakers courtesy of Pro Skates and an owl t-shirt. Unlike me, he’d take a helicopter over a sailboat any day. Adding to the list of things he’s taught me; it’s always cool to go your own way….
