Jayme Walters, the graphic designer behind the branding for products like East Coast Organic Milk and Raymar’s Home Sweeter Home Event, is designing something different in her spare time: whimsical hand-sewn sock creatures.
Running RAWR Creatures has rounded her out artistically by giving her more room to play. “Design can be really structured,” says Walters. “There are always requirements that need to be met. I love my design work, but when I’m making my creatures, I get to do whatever I want. I think that’s why I’m doing it.” Embellishing the creatures is a particularly fun part for Walters. The buttons and other small items used to decorate her creatures are usually sourced from thrift stores, antique stores and yard sales.
Although she began with sock monsters, she’s started branching out. She’s added an owl design, and has recently started making cats and snails. Past projects have included a Zombie Monster, a Ballerina Monster, and a Monster version of Dartmouth Clothing owner Eric Miller, with tiny aviators and hat included.
Prices for RAWR Creatures range from $55 to $65 for standard sized creatures, and from $20 to $30 for Eeps (small creatures), Mini Owls and Kittens. Custom orders range from $60 to $120, depending on how detailed the request.
