New season, new flavours: Beer for fall

Brewers launch new beers and bring back some seasonal favourites as summer turns to fall

With autumn upon us, brewers are trying new creations and bringing back some seasonal favourites Halifax’s brewer are ramping up for the cooler months with new brews galore.

Nine Locks will add at least two new styles to its four core offerings. Watch for a traditional cream ale in September and an American pale ale later this fall.

• Maritime Brine gose by Gahan House launched at Seaport BeerFest. It’s everything the name suggests: tart and salty with a hint of the sea. This new addition will last all year, so drink your fill.

Good Robot Brewing Co.’s popular steam beer, Crown on the Ground, returns this month. Earthy and roasty. The amber malt in the mix shines through while the hops take a back seat.

In addition to our hearty compliment of brewers, our city is stacked with stores stocking CFA ales to pack your fridge.

• Sunnyside Session IPA from Toronto’s Great Lakes Brewery will be available at Bishop’s Cellar later this month. It’s light with a quick hop punch and a dry finish. It’ll sellout quickly, so don’t linger.

• Another Ontario option, Nickel Brook Brewing Co. from Burlington is already available in some Halifax stores. Watch for the crisp and light Lux Lager and the full-bodied, well-balanced Maple Porter.

Brasseurs du Monde from St. Hyacinthe, Quebec, will make its local debut with eight different beers at Bishop’s Cellar. Try L’Interdite 60 and L’Interdite 90, each referring to how long the beer is hopped.

For many, fall means pumpkin beer. Local stalwarts Propeller Brewing Pumpkin Ale and Garrison Brewing Double Jack Imperial Pumpkin return in late September. Check these out too.

Breton Brewing will launch a pumpkin beer that you’ll find on tap around the city.

• Coade Word: Snowmaggedon from Big Spruce returns! This big beer packs 8.1% ABV. It’s made with heritage gila squash grown on the brewery farm, smoked and mixed into the mash. The beer conditions on rum soaked cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla beans. Thanksgiving dinner in a bottle.

The hop harvest season just passed which means there’s plenty to look forward to.

Boxing Rock and North Brewing team up again for their Many Hand Pale Ale collaboration. This year’s batch uses freshly picked local hops and malt from Horton Ridge Malt and Grain Co. in Hortonville, N.S.

Picaroon’s Traditional Ales launches its annual Harvest Ales series near the end of the month. Each beer features hops and malts from Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and P.E.I. Find a batch number on the label and visit the brewery’s website to learn more about the farmer behind your beer.

The beer scene’s rapid growth isn’t slowing down. Here are some newcomers to watch this fall.

• Mark and Kelly Huizink and Jeremy Taylor will open 2crows Brewing on Brunswick Street later this fall. The brewery will can and fill growlers, plus feature a small tap room with light eats. Watch for European-influenced North American beer styles.

• Falmouth’s Schoolhouse Brewery is expanding. The new Windsor location offers an opportunity to brew more, and new styles of beer. Schoolhouse hopes to brew in the new locale by November, offer retail by December, and open a tap room in early 2017.
