Without fail, my sense of style takes a turn for the casual over the summer. My wardrobe becomes less structured and more laid-back as the weather warms (sandals and loose dresses can be lived in oh-so happily for the summer duration). With this more carefree style comes a yearning for the delicate and dangling (jewellery, that is). So, I was pleased to hear about the latest summer collections from TORI.XO. I have been a long-standing fan of her distinctive skeleton key pendants for years now and always keep an eye on her ethereal yet contemporary designs.
TORI.XO designer Tori Poynton hails from Australia but has called Halifax home for eight years. Continuously inspired by her love of travel, she visits Paris on an annual basis to source vintage lace as design embellishments. However, the new summer collections were inspired by snorkeling in the sea of her hometown, Palm Beach, Australia.
“All pieces are a constant reminder of summer adventures and can be worn daytime into evening, dressed up with a tassel kimono or worn casually with your favourite beach dress,” says Poynton.
The underwater world of corals and seagrass are ongoing themes throughout the collections of handmade silver pieces. The Seagrass Earrings Dangly and pendant seem to capture the feeling of tidal movement while the statement Sea Gem ring reflects tropical ocean hues in a striking, oversized silver setting. Favourites for me would be the necklaces and earrings from the Sea Chain collection, which boasts simple yet a touch edgy chained rings of silver in organic shapes linked together elegantly. The quintessential long chain is perfect for layering and dangling over shapely bronzed shoulders. All of these dreamy pieces would be ideal to wear beach or poolside, at a garden or rooftop soiree and perhaps matched with a boho floral crown.
“The sea inspired collections are for everyday luxury and designed for a dreamer, a sun seeker, for the woman who embodies a goddess of the sea—a siren,” says Poynton. “The Sea Chain necklace long can be wrapped around twice or worn long reminiscent of the ocean and the chrysoprase in the Sea Gem ring is reminiscent of looking into the sea. The collections are designed to be played with.”
These romantic silver pieces immediately evoke the desire to kick-off one’s sandals, sip a mojito and soak up the sun amongst the sand dunes. This can’t be a bad thing. Either way, Poynton has succeeded in capturing the gorgeous and elusive feeling that is summer.
