Building a Better Editor: Damage Control

In the last year, as I’ve worked to lose weight (approximately 45 pounds) and get in better shape, I’ve benefitted from the wisdom of trainer Jon Ells at GoodLife Park Lane. I did several months of personal training with Jon, and have gone through four different team-training programs with him. Jon has a simple, common-sense approach to training that makes sense to me: no quick fixes, no fad diets—just simple incremental steps. (For instance, he tells me that as diets go, it’s hard to beat the Canada Food Guide). So now, as I’m trying to refocus and get back on track, I’m thinking about some good advice Jon gave me just before Christmas last year.

He didn’t expect me to be a saint over Christmas—temptations abound. Instead, he urged me make better choices. Save carbs by having extra turkey instead of potatoes at Christmas dinner. If I were having pie for dessert, forego the scoop of ice cream. If I can’t get to the gym for a full workout, can I bang out a half-hour of cardio sometime during the day? He reminded me that every less-bad choice like that I made would make things that much easier for me in January.

A couple of weeks ago, I noticed that I had gained a couple pounds—the first time the scales have gone up for me in a year. I didn’t care for that one bit, but I was at a loss what to do, as I had some family obligations that kept me away from the gym and forced some not-great eating choices on me. This week, I remembered that advice Jon gave me a year ago and embraced it. I managed a couple brief but intense workouts. I made better food choices. And I signed up for more TRX Team Training in January. And after a week of trying harder, my weight has gone back to what I like to think of as my new normal (around 178 pounds, compared to 225 pounds about 13 months ago).

I know how easy it is to slip but, as I discovered at this time last year, it doesn’t have to be the end of the world. In January, I’m back in training, more intense than ever, and getting ready to run some portion of the Blue Nose Marathon in the spring. Stay tuned for my progress…
