It’s the most wonderful time of year to be a craft-beer fan. Patios are open, lighter styles of beer replace their dark cousins and, of course, Nova Scotia Craft Beer Week begins.

L’Etoile de la Mer Saison with Summer Savoury
Tidehouse Brewing
Halifax
It doesn’t get much more local than this: Chinook leaf hops from Fundy Hops in Berwick, N.S., summer savoury from Farmer John’s Herbs in Canning, N.S., and Horton Ridge Malt in Woldville, N.S. This SMaSH (single malt, single hop) brew offers a nod to Acadian heritage with its French name and flavourful savoury.

Koji Kondo (Sake beer)
Good Robot Brewing
Halifax
This Japanese-inspired brew packs international flavours thanks to the sake yeast used in its fermentation. Good Robot’s Josh Counsil describes it as light, crisp, and fruity. Bonus points if you recognized the name as that of the composer of such video game hit soundtracks as the Mario and The Legend of Zelda series.

Black and Tan
Big Spruce Brewing/Breton Brewing
Nyanza, N.S./Coxheath, N.S.
Jamieson’s Irish Pub in Dartmouth will host a Cape Breton Tap Takeover May 4–7 in celebration of Nova Scotia Craft Beer Week. Pop in for this rare opportunity to sample the best of the island in one glass. The Cape Breton Black and Tan features Big Spruce Brewing’s Cereal Killer Stout blended with Breton Brewing’s Stirling Hefeweizen.

902 Crows In Theory (kettle sour)
902 Brewcast/2 Crows Brewing
Halifax
Collaboration beers are often lesser than the sum of their parts, but I have big hopes for this one. It’s a dry hopped kettle sour that came from the minds of mad beer scientist Jeremy Talyor, head brewer at 2 Crows, and the hosts of Nova Scotia’s only weekly podcast about craft beer, 902 Brewcast: Philip Church, Kyle Andrus, and Tony Wight. The brewers describe it as “crush city, lil’ tart, lil’ funky.” It’ll be on tap at the Friday session of Full House Craft Beer Fest, and available in limited supply at the tap room.

Schoolhouse Brewery
Windsor, N.S.
It’s perfect day trip weather, and now you have somewhere new to visit. Schoolhouse Brewery opened its classroom-themed tap room this past weekend. You’ll find your favourite Schoolhouse brews like the aromatic Principal pale ale and robust Chequers Ale porter, and new additions including the Oatmeal TAN Coffee Stout.
