Every summer I’m amazed by how many inspiring and fun things there are to do here in the region. It’s a regular smorgasbord of cool events, workshops, local food tastings and many activities with the opportunity to simply be outside. It’s hard to narrow down my wish list, but here are a few local happenings that I think are truly summer hits.
I finally had the opportunity to attend a floral crown workshop hosted by Oh Dina! milliner, Nicole McInnis. What could be better than sipping sangria while getting crafty with a bunch of creative ladies? Not much, in my humble opinion. My end result was an ethereal, delicate crown in shades of blush, perfect for attending a garden party. McInnis will be hosting these workshops on a weekly basis all summer and it’s the ideal way to channel your inner flower child.
I missed it last year but this quaint, welcoming festival bursting with indie music darlings is a quintessential summertime favourite for me. Not only do you get your pick of amazing concerts in a wide variety of settings (chapels, tents, taverns) but Sackville, New Brunswick, also just happens to be a hip little town with organic eateries and a nearby lake and beaches for afternoon sojourns. I’ll never forget cursing myself for missing Arcade Fire’s secret show a few years back but being pleasantly surprised when I arrived to catch the band lakeside lounging the next day. This year’s line-up includes Constantines, Basia Bulat, Cousins and Shotgun & Jaybird, among many others.
Each year, the Atlantic Film Festival presents an outdoor screening series with the spotlight on a well-loved actor or director. This year, the theme is “Summer of Sandra” with a line-up of Sandra Bullock movies to choose from. I love this outdoor film series because it’s a laid-back opportunity to watch a beloved flick at sunset and then under the stars. Bring your own chair or blanket and grab some freshly made popcorn and enjoy al-fresco cinema waterside. I have lovely memories of riding my bike down to catch Meatballs during “Summer of Bill.” Where else can you catch a crowd chanting, “It just doesn’t matter!” with laughter rippling uproariously over the water?
Ahhhhh, summer! You’ve finally arrived.
