With summer right around the corner (sorry spring, I guess we skipped you), my mind is wandering to thoughts of day-tripping and all the wonderful Nova Scotia destinations that are so close yet still removed from the city. I got a little sampling of this recently when some friends and I took an impromptu trip to Riverport on the South Shore to visit the Old Confidence Lodge.
On a perfect sun-lingering evening, we meandered our way down the picturesque secondary highway from Lunenburg to Riverport (with a quick stop at the beloved Salt Shaker Deli). The Old Confidence Lodge is a large hall which sits on the LaHave River, offering quintessential waterfront views. We made the journey to see Montreal band Plants and Animals play with Paper Beat Scissors in this lovely rural setting and to celebrate an old friend’s homecoming.
For anyone looking for a little getaway that isn’t too far, I would recommend keeping an eye on the Old Confidence Lodge’s upcoming events. This venue attracts cool local and national bands and offers ideal acoustics in a welcoming, open space. It didn’t hurt either that Nina’s BBQ was on hand with fresh gourmet tacos and that local beer was available as well as a temptingly summery gin drink called the “South Sider.” If you’re looking for an easy, carefree road trip this summer, I’d highly recommend taking a little detour from the usual South Shore hotspots and giving the Old Confidence a try.
