There’s never been a better arms race for the people of Halifax than the ongoing Burger Wars we’ve seen over the course of the year. With each new opening, a whole other world of gourmet creations, juicy patties, and beautiful buns add fuel to the fire that is quickly becoming the city’s foodie obsession. Our old favourites like Darrell’s are stepping up their game with new, never frozen Angus patties while Cheachie’s holds down the fort with Mexican-inspired monsters, but let’s focus on some of the new arrivals that have got people chomping.
Just because they’re mostly bun and beef doesn’t mean burgers have to be low brow. A small but mighty menu at Ace Burger Co (the sizzling sister shop of the Brooklyn Warehouse) includes “Asian pork, classic beef, veggie, jerk chicken, lamb, and now a fried clam,” all made with locally-sourced ingredients wherever possible. This former Open City pop-up restaurant is a welcome sight in its new permanent home at Gus’ Pub. Kathy J “may have shed a tear” as she finished her last bite topped with “frisée lettuce, crunchy onions, and dijonnaise.” Cash only but there’s an ATM on site.
Another local venture, Flipburger, is the latest addition to the Chris Tzaneteas Empire, joining favourites like Ela Greek Taverna and Argyle Bar & Grill. Fifteen burger choices mingle with add-ons like Applewood Smoked Cheddar, house-made peanut sauce, and caramelized pineapple for build-your-own bliss. Jill M was bested by the pure size of these sizzlers. Finishing about half of her cheeseburger and fries, she “didn’t try a milkshake this visit, but they looked delicious.” With creative concoctions that rival the burgers themselves, these are the things that adventurous eaters live for: Peanut Butter Banana Bacon, anyone?
A five-month veteran among the next generation of local burger joints, the Chef-Michael-Smith-endorsed Cheese Curds has been the talk of the town for months. Murray W is among the throngs of people lining up for their gourmet grub, ordering “their Legendary CC Porker which comes with two 6oz Angus patties, cheese curds, bacon, onion rings, and their CC sauce.” It sounds like a beast of a burger, well, because it is! But against all odds, “the bun somehow managed to hold it all together while maintaining the perfect meat-bun ratio.” And isn’t that what really matters?
Begging for more burgers? Well, you won’t have to wait long with Relish set to open on Quinpool at some point this summer, The Works arriving on Doyle Street in September, and Cheese Curds 2 slated to hit Burnside by fall. Don’t worry—we’ll keep in the loop with all the delicious developments but in the meantime, download our free mobile app to make sure you’re never far from your next burger binge!
