Familiar faces: Halifax election results

By | Oct 21, 2012 Newly elected Halifax Mayor Mike Savage casts his vote.

Municipal election results are in and, as polls predicted, Mike Savage won the mayoral election by a large margin, taking 63,547 votes. Tom Martin’s campaign released several press releases claiming pre-election polls were over-stating Savage’s lead, but ultimately, the results proved the polls correct, with the only particularly close part of the race being between Martin (21,912) and Fred Connors …

Some interesting trends are emerging in Halifax’s municipal election advance voting, according to report released by HRM Returning Officer Cathy Mellett late Friday. As of 3pm Friday, about 9% of the 297,500 eligible voters had cast ballots in advance polls. In virtually every district, the majority of advance votes are coming via the Internet. Advance-voting rates are particularly strong among young voters: …

Adams, editor Before Wednesday morning, I knew virtually nothing of Vince Hall. But for this discussion, there are only three details necessary to summarize Hall’s political presence: he was a Cape Breton Regional …

Halifax needs a mayor

By | May 25, 2012 images

I don’t mean Halifax needs a new mayor in the October election; I mean Halifax needs a mayor now. Okay, technically we have one. Incumbent Peter Kelly is still in office, chairing Council meetings and, I assume, doing his job behind the scenes. But in terms of public leadership, our mayor has been pretty well invisible since February. Before the …

High hopes for a smaller Council

By | May 2, 2012 hrmdistricts-copy-300x145

For a couple of years now, we’ve been calling for cuts in the size of HRM Council, which will finally happen in October’s municipal election. And yesterday’s Council discussion on proposed cuts to Metro Transit’s ferry illustrates once again why a smaller Council will be better for Halifax. Several Councillors objected to maintaining late-night ferry service when their own districts …

A plurality of residents continue to support breaking HRM into two separate municipalities (one urban, one rural) according to the latest polling results from Corporate Research Associates. For much of the past eight years, residents have consistently supported a …

Mayor Peter Kelly wants more open government?

By | Nov 30, 2011 PeterKelly

Sometime on or around November 29, three Christmas ghosts visited Halifax Mayor Peter Kelly. Through a series of time-travelling vignettes, they showed His Worship the terrible fate that would befall Halifax if he didn’t embrace more open government. Or so I assume. How else to explain yesterday afternoon’s peculiar press release? In it, Peter Kelly explains how it’s his responsibility …
