Yesterday, April 23, was Nova Scotia’s worst day of the pandemic thus far, with four more deaths and 55 new confirmed cases of COVID-19. Overall, the province has now seen 16 deaths and 827 confirmed cases. Three of yesterday’s COVID deaths were at Northwood and one at Harbourstone Enhanced Care in Sydney.

Testing, testing
Nova Scotia’s pandemic-containment strategy relies on extensive testing to track its spread. “Nova Scotia has 23,731 negative test results,” says yesterday’s government press release. “Confirmed cases range in age from under 10 to over 90. Ten individuals are currently in hospital, four of those in ICU… Cases have been identified in all parts of the province.”

So far, so good?
With its East Coast Voice online panel, comprised of some 3,200 Atlantic Canadians, Narrative Research is exploring public perceptions and behaviours related to COVID-19.

  • Results indicate that Atlantic Canadians are satisfied with the response of the provincial government, the federal government, and the health-care system. More than eight in 10 residents express some level of satisfaction.
  • Atlantic Canadians in each province voice overall satisfaction with the performance of both their Premier and their Chief Medical Officer’s response, with nine in 10 residents reporting some level of satisfaction.
  • Findings show high compliance with public-health directives. Virtually all of panelists indicated that they have practised social distancing, while almost all have reportedly stayed home and did not go out except for necessities, or washed their hands more frequently than usual.

Enough to eat
As the pandemic and its economic turmoil drag on, food security is a growing concern for many Nova Scotians. Many people are helping with donations to food banks. Others are taking a more direct approach. In Bible Hill, Beverly and Basil Crowe have set up a pantry with free food for anyone who needs it. “We know what it’s like,” Beverly tells Raissa Tetanish in this recent report for Hub Now. “We’ve been down and out before.”

Price protections
Price-gouging is illegal during a state of emergency… but price gouging may not be what you think it is. “There isn’t a comprehensive list of products or services that are considered essential,” writes Peter Moorhouse in this recent Halifax Magazine column. “If you don’t need that product to live safely right now, it probably isn’t [essential]. Food, gasoline, and medications? Absolutely. A Netflix subscription? Probably not.” Learn what price gouging really is and how you can fight it.

Because we Love, we Cry”
In the aftermath of last weekend’s attacks, poet Sheree Fitch couldn’t help but write “Because we Love, we Cry,” a poem that is spreading quickly across the internet, helping many work through their feelings. “It burst forth from me,” she tells The Pictou Advocate. “I didn’t write it. It wrote itself… Sorrow is indeed a story of love.”

Sometimes there is no sense to things my child
Sometimes there is no answer to the questions why
Sometimes things beyond all understanding
Sometimes, people die.

When it hurts like this , my child
When you are scared, suffering, confused
Evne if we are not together
Together, let us cry

Yes, there is still so much love
Because we love, we cry.

Sometimes the sadness takes away your breath
Sometimes the pain seems endless, deep
Sometimes you cannot find the sun
Sometimes you wish you were asleep.

When it hurts like this , my child
When you are scared and confused
Even if we are not together,
Together, let us cry

Yes, there is still so much love
Because we love, we cry.

Wish that I had answers, child
Wish all this wasn’t so
There are impossible things ,child
I cannot bear for you to know .

When it hurts like this , my child
When you are scared and confused
Even if we are not together,
Together, let us cry

Yes, there is still so much love
Because we love, we cry.
